His father was surnamed Zhang, named Yi, courtesy name Shaoping; his mother was Tian Shi. Yi was 200 years old. His appearance resembled that of a child. Shuo was born three days before Tian Shi died. She died in the third year of Emperor Jingdi's reign (Han dynasty). A neighborly mother picked up Shuo and raised him; at that time, the east was just beginning to brighten, so he took his surname from it. At three years old, he could comprehend all the hidden knowledge of the world; after a single glance, he would recite it from memory. He often spoke to himself alone, directing his words toward the sky and space above. The neighborly mother suddenly lost sight of Shuo. After returning home briefly for several months, his mother scolded and beat him. Later he left again and returned only after a whole year had passed. His mother was greatly surprised upon seeing him and said, "You have been away for an entire year before returning; how can you comfort me?" Shuo said, "The child briefly went to the Zi Ni Sea; there was purple water that stained my clothes. I then passed through Yuquan for washing and rinsing. I left in the morning and returned at noon—how can it be called an entire year?" His mother asked again, "Which countries did you pass through?" Shuo said, "After I finished washing my clothes, I briefly rested on the Chongtai of Mingdu." I took one nap. Prince Wang Gongdi gave me red chestnuts and a drink of danli xiajiang (red chestnut nectar). After eating too much, the child became full and suffocated nearly to death; he then drank half a ge of Xuantian Huanglu (Black Heaven Yellow Dew). He immediately awoke and, on his way back, encountered a gray tiger resting by the road. At first, the child rode the tiger back, but it beat him too painfully; the tiger bit the child's foot and injured it." The people of that land all wove pearls and jade into mats, invited me to enter a curtain made of cloud-like silk, placed black jasper carved pillows before me, and engraved them in the shapes of suns, moons, clouds, and thunder. They were also called Loukong Zhen (carved hollow pillows). They were also called Xuandiao Zhen (black carved pillows). He was also presented with precious mats made from the fine hair of □min. They wove a mat using the fine hairs of one hundred □min. This hair-mat is cold to the touch and was often used in summer for comfort. Therefore, it was named Rouhao Shuizao Zhi Ru (Soft Hair Waterweed Mat). I raised my hand to wipe it. Afraid that the water would dampen the mat, I looked closely and realized it was light."

If a person was ill, the branch would sweat; if someone was about to die, the branch would break. In the past, Laozi lived for 2700 years during the Zhou dynasty, and this branch did not sweat; Hongya Xiansheng, who was already 3000 years old during the time of Emperor Yao, also did not cause this branch to break once. The emperor then gave it to Shuo, who said: "I have seen this branch wither and die three times, yet revive again—how could mere sweating or breaking be enough?"
